The Sortland Male Choir was founded in 1922, and is one of the oldest choirs in Northern Norway. They have 28 members between the ages of 45-80. During 87 years of singing, the choir has done a lot of things: concerts, shows, trips to several countries, television performances, recordings and much more. The choir sings all kinds of music: classical, national hymns, different folk music, chorals, Negro spirituals and some contemporary music. The choir achieved 2nd place in a national competition in 2007. Since 2002, Johnny Bakken (46) has been our conductor. He is a professional conductor, and got his very high level exam in conducting at Northern Norway Music Conservatory – with the famous conductor Ragnar Rasmussen. Master classes from all around the world is also on his CV. His musical intention is that “the real thing starts with the heart”. He started his career in conducting as a 14 year old boy! Sortland is a city with 9 000 people, and is located in the world famous Vesteraalen and Lofoten area in northern Norway, located north of the Arctic circle in “the land of the Midnight Sun”.
