The Girl Choir Živorad Grbić was founded on 1 September in the school year 2015-2016. It had its first performance with the Children’s church choir ‘Hadži Ruvim’ in the big concert hall of Valjevo’s Culture Centre for New Year, and after that it performed many times in the concert hall of the Secondary music school ‘Živorad Grbić.’ Since its founding, the choir competed in at least two or three competitions a year and won eight awards, including two gold medals at Choir Festival ‘May Music Festival’ in Bljeljina in 2016 and 2017. The choir was the absolute winner of its category at the ‘Choir Festival’ in Valjevo in 2019, and it also won the second award at the Republic completion of music schools in Serbia in 2018. The choir also won the second award at the Ohrid Choir festival in 2019, and it won the award for the best performance for the composition of Macedonian composer. The choir’s conductor, since its founding days, is Milica Stepanović Baba-Milkić.
Milica Stepanović Baba-Milkić was born in Belgrade in 1968. She finished the course of music theory in the Secondary music school ‘Josip Slavenski’, and solo singing in the Secondary music school ‘Mokranjac.’ She studied at Faculty of Music in Belgrade where she graduated in general music pedagogy in 1991. During her studies, between 1986 and 1991, she was a member of the Academic Choir Collegium Musicum. Since 1991 she has been working as a teacher of music theory in the Secondary music school ‘Živorad Grbić’, and in the period between 2010 and 2015 she was the principal of the same school.
Valjevo is a city and the administrative centre of the Kolubara Distict in western Serbia. Its rich culturall heritage makes its inhabitants both proud and responsible for it. “Jazz fest” and “Tešnjarske večeri”, manifestations held annually in Valjevo, have become more than regional events.
